Welcome to the Mouth and Foot
Painting Artists Website
Welcome to the Irish web site of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. Formed in 1957, the MFPA partnership is part of an international self-help association of artists (AMFPA) who paint without the use of their hands. One it’s early members was Christy Brown and currently Irish artist Mai Ryan is among its 770 members in over 70 countries worldwide.
The MFPA is a partnership of disabled artists run by the artists themselves. This website details the formation of the association in 1957 and provides an insight into the artists, their paintings and examples of their inspirational work.
The partnership reproduces its artists’ original paintings as unique greeting cards, calendars and a wide range of other products, which brings vital financial security to its artists. Sign up here if you’d like to be included on the mailing list.
From the beginning its members have had full control of the enterprise that enables them to enjoy a secure livelihood despite severe impairments and which has given them a purpose in life. Many have achieved international recognition through work produced with brushes held by their teeth or clenched between their toes.
Mai Ryan says that joining the Association has encouraged her to paint more often and given her the opportunity to learn about art and is grateful for the moral and financial support the Association and the other artists provide. Mai finds painting both relaxing and theraputic.
Mai says “I realise my limitations are merely physical, spiritually I’m capable of achieving the things that are important to me and creatively I’m in the process of achieving them”
